About Sophie Stevens

Sophie Stevens is experienced in providing legal assistance to legal entities and natural persons in financial-economic criminal cases, in particular fraud and environmental criminal cases. She advises companies, directors, shareholders and employees and assists them in criminal proceedings. Sophie is also specialised in cassation cases. Sophie also focuses on handling general criminal, traffic and Opium Act-related cases. She also frequently provides legal assistance in proceedings relating to the deprivation of illegally obtained assets. Sophie is also regularly approached to provide legal assistance to (police) officials.

Education and career

In 2014, Sophie graduated from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam with a major in criminal (procedural) law. After graduating, she started her professional career as a court clerk at the criminal law sector of the district court of The Hague. She then joined the Amsterdam Court of Appeal as senior legal officer handling criminal cases on appeal, focusing on fraud and economic crime.

Sophie was active for many years as a committee member and board member of the Association of the Young Bar of the Dutch Supreme Court. Sophie has been associated as an author with the SDU commentary on the Code of Criminal Procedure and has provided the periodical current affairs column Environmental Criminal Law for the Sanctions Law & Company Magazine. In 2022, she completed the preparation course in Criminal Law at the Willem Pompe Institute (Utrecht University). Sophie regularly lectures on criminal investigation and enforcement processes for representatives of companies and their employees. She is an active member of the Dutch Association of Young Defence Counsel.

In the Register of Jurisdictions of the Netherlands Bar, Sophie is registered as a specialist in criminal law. This specialism includes:

  • Financial-economic criminal law
  • Fiscal criminal law
  • International criminal law
  • Environmental criminal law

She is also registered as a specialist in cassation (punishment).

Sophie Stevens obtains a minimum of ten training points each calendar year in the field of these specialisations according to the standards of the Netherlands Bar.
