About Irem Çakir

Irem focuses on defending both individuals and companies in complex criminal proceedings, particularly in the areas of financial and economic crimes and environmental (criminal) law. She advises and represents clients in national and cross-border (internal) criminal investigations, enforcement issues, and criminal and administrative law proceedings. In addition, she focuses on complex issues surrounding anti-money laundering regulations, sanctions, and corporate reporting. Irem joined Sjöcrona Van Stigt in July 2025 and works from the Rotterdam office.

 

Education and career

Irem studied Law at Leiden University, specializing in criminal law and criminal procedure law, with an extracurricular focus on corporate law. She also completed a postgraduate program at East China University of Political Science and Law in Shanghai. During her studies, Irem gained experience in corporate criminal law at various leading law firms. She was also active as the host and creator of a legal podcast affiliated with Leiden University, in which she discussed a wide range of topics in the field of legal philosophy and legal practice. From October 2022 to July 2025, she worked as a lawyer at A&O Shearman (formerly Allen & Overy) in Amsterdam, where she was part of the corporate criminal law and environmental and planning law practice groups. In addition to the Professional Training Program for Lawyers, she also completed the program at The Law Firm School.
